I began working at the clinic in 2006. Prior to joining the clinic full time I worked in the home health setting with pediatric as well as geriatric clients in various settings besides the home such as assisted living facilities, day care centers, group homes and in schools. I have worked with a varied mix of physical and cognitive challenges such as Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, Autistic Disorders and Learning Disabilities. As a parent of a child with ADHD/Tourette Syndrome and another child with ADD/Learning Disabilities I feel I have a deeper understanding of the child and what the parents are going through. Because of this I try to work closely with the whole family and I focus on the child’s needs whether it is sensory based, fine or gross motor skill difficulties or ADD/ADHD and also take into account the child’s interests.
I am certified in the Handwriting Without Tears program. It is a handwriting program taught using audio, visual, tactile and kinetic aspects so it is a very sensory based program reaching the needs of children with different learning styles. Handwriting fluency is fundamental to learning because children think and write at the same time. When we teach children to write, we also teach them how to express themselves. If they struggle to form their letters, their ability to express themselves will suffer. Children who don’t master handwriting may be slow, sloppy, or illegible writers. I am certified as an Interactive Metronome Provider (IMC) with the advanced designation of IMAP (Interactive Metronome Advanced Pediatrics) I also have certification as an Interactive Metronome Home Specialist (IM Home) specialist, an assessment and treatment tool used in therapy to improve the neurological processes of motor planning, sequencing and processing. The IM program provides a structured, goal-oriented process that challenges the patient to synchronize a range of hand and foot exercises to a precise computer-generated reference tone heard through headphones. The patient attempts to match the rhythmic beat with repetitive motor actions. A patented auditory-visual guidance system provides immediate feedback measured in milliseconds, and a score is provided. Over the course of the treatment, patients learn to:
- Focus and attend for longer periods of time
- Increase physical endurance and stamina
- Filter out internal and external distractions
- Improve ability to monitor mental and physical actions as they are occurring
- Progressively improve coordinated performance.
